Born on January 20th, 1900, Colin Clive had a relatively short acting career, due to his death at the age of 37. Colin starred on both stage and film, and although only 3 of his films were actual horror films, we will always remember him as Dr. Henry Frankenstein in James Whale's Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein. Who could forget his wonderful performances in both films as Dr. Frankenstein, the man who made monsters! His performance as the Dr. Frankenstein set the stage for future portrayals of crazed scientists for years, much in the same way Bela Lugosi set the standard for Dracula. I would like to wish a very Happy Birthday to my favorite mad scientist!

Born January 16, 1948, John Carpenter went on to be one of horror's favorite sons. The man who brought us such contemporary classics as The Thing, Christine, The Fog, Escape From New York, and the ultimate classic, the one and only original Halloween! I had the privilege of interviewing John at Spooky Empire's Ultimate Horror Weekend 2010, and he was definitely an incredible individual. Below is the footage from the interview. John is truly a master or horror, and I personally want to thank him for bringing us such wonderfully frightening films! Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a John Carpenter movie marathon in honor of his birthday! Happy Birthday to the Horror Meister!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ERNEST THESIGER!

Ernest Frederic Graham Thesiger was born January 15th, 1879, and although his career spanned over 5 decades, we will always remember him as the flamboyantly quirky Doctor Pretorius in James Whale's masterpiece The Bride Of Frankenstein. Ernest took on many roles during his career, but horror fans will always cherish the characters he played in the horror films, such as Dr. Pretorius, Horace Femm in another James Whale classic, The Old Dark House, Laing in The Ghoul, starring Boris Karloff, and his small but memorable role as the undertaker in the 1951 classic Scrooge, starring Alastair Sim (considered the best version of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, and definitely my favorite version!) I know I posted about this movie last Halloween season, but I honestly can't get enough of it. It is now my second favorite Halloween-themed movie, second only to John Carpenter's Halloween of course! A great movie, featuring cleverly written stories that are woven together by our little friend Sam Hain. Starring Anna Paquin (Miss Sookie Stackhouse herself), Brian Cox, Dylan Baker, and Quinn Lord as little Sam. If you've never seen it, treat yourself to a great film,...if you have seen it, don't deny yourself the pleasure of watching it again!

The film that started it all, and although there have been many sequels and even a remake, none will ever compare to the original. I am sure I don't have to tell all you fans of the Halloween season about this movie, and I am assuming you have all seen it....if not, shame on you!!

Elsa Sullivan Lanchester, was born October 28, 1902, and went on to become a very accomplished and successful actress of theatre, film and television. Her most popular and endearing character, The Bride Of Frankenstein, will live on forever in film and horror history, with the iconic image of the Bride with her hair standing on end and the white stripe on the sides, as well as the woman who created her, Mary Shelley (also portrayed by Elsa in the same film.). Elsa had a very long and diverse film career, starring in over 66 films. Elsa passed away on December 26, 1986 of pneumonia at the age of 84. Happy Birthday to the original Bride!

When I was a kid, way back before the days of DVDs or even VHS tapes, we'd have to wait for certain times of the year to catch our favorite movies and shows. We'd have to wait for Christmas to watch the Grinch, and we'd have to wait for Halloween to watch "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown", among many other Halloween favorites. One of my favorites was the Fat Albert Halloween Special. I grew up watching the Fat Albert cartoon series, and when they made a Halloween special, well, I was incredibly excited. I dunno, I just really liked it. It was definitely a silly cartoon, with some spooky moments, and as usual, a moral to the story in true Fat Albert fashion. If you've never watched it, give it a view and tell me what you think!

Countdown To Halloween, Day 22: Skeleton Frolic (1937)

The 1937 cartoon short, Skeleton Frolic, directer by Ub Iwerks and released by Colombia pictures, can be considered by most as a follow-up to Disney's famous Black and White cartoon short "The Skeleton Dance". As much as I love the original Disney cartoon, I have to admit I prefer Skeleton Frolic more, for several reasons. The obvious being the color. Secondly, the animation seems to be a bit better, the background images are wonderful, and it's just a better made cartoon all around, of course, in my opinion. Although both are incredibly similar in theme, and both featured the work of Ub Iwerks, Skeleton Frolic seems to have the upper hand.
Check out Skeleton Frolic, then compare it to Disney's Skeleton Dance (which I posted earlier this month) and tell me which one you prefer!

In honor of Lux Interior's birthday today (sadly Lux passed away on February 4, 2009 of aortic dissection), I am presenting to you a video of The Cramps performing "I Was A Teenage Werewolf" live in concert. Lux may be gone but his music will never die. Considered by many to be the forefather of Psychobilly music, Lux and The Cramps built themselves quite a fan base and have been associated with garage rock as well as horror since they first burst onto the music scene in 1976. I hope you enjoy this video!

All goes well until a clanking suit of armor inhabited by the ghost of Peeping Tom (voiced by Phil Arnold) instructs the Stooges to leave him be. Shemp, Larry and Moe all take turns trying to move Tom but he spooks the Stooges away. After finally gaining their trust, Tom tells the trio the story of how he is waiting for Lady Godiva. Enjoy!

Scrappy was a cartoon character created by Dick Huemer for Charles Mintz's Krazy Kat Studio. A little round-headed boy, Scrappy often found himself involved in off-beat neighborhood adventures. One of all-time favorite cartoons, "Scrappy's Ghost Story" was released May 24, 1935. Scrappy was a very popular cartoon character during the 1930's, spawning many animated shorts.

Kudos to Greg for coming up with this wonderful tribute to the classic monsters of yesteryear. I had the good fortune of sitting down with Greg last May and interviewing him regarding his career, and I am happy to say that Greg was one of the nicest, funniest guys I've ever met!

ZACHERLE, Born John Zacherle on September 26, 1918 (also known as Zacherley), is probably one of the best known Horror Hosts in television history, right next to Vampira and Elvira. His horror host career started in 1957, when he created the character of "Roland" for Philadelphia's SHOCK THEATER. He eventually became "Zacherle" in 1959, then started hosting CHILLER THEATRE in New York a few years later. With the release of several horror novelty records, his hosting of several horror movie shows and even an American Bandstand-style dance music show called Disc-o-Teen, Zacherle remains one of the most recognized figures in the horror host community, and will always be the Godfather of Horror Hosts! Happy Birthday to the Coolest Ghoul ever!

Fredric March, born August 31, 1897, may not have had a career in horror, but he does have the distinction of winning the very first Academy Award for Best Actor in a horror role, that of the title character in MGM's 1931 classic, DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, an honor that wouldn't come to another actor for another 60 years, when Anthony Hopkins won his Oscar for THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. Fredric did manage to win yet another Oscar for Leading Male Actor in 1946 for THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES. Fredric's roles were mostly always in dramatic films, but he did manage to play "Death" in DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY in 1934. fredric had a very long and successful career in films, spanning 6 decades. Happy Birthday Fredric!

Evelyn Ankers, born August 17, 1918, is definitely a familiar face to the classic horror fans. Known as "the Queen of Screamers", Evelyn starred in many classiC horror films throughout the 1930s-40s, such as THE WOLFMAN, THE MAD GHOUL, THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN, SON OF DRACULA and many others. Usually playing the love interest/damsel in distress, Evelyn had a very long career in film and television, starring in horror classics, as well as dramas and comedies. Evelyn sadly passed away on August 29, 1985, from ovarian cancer, but her roles will never be forgotten. Happy Birthday to one of Hollywood's original Scream Queens!

Glenn Strange, born August 16, 1899, was one of Hollywood's hardest working character actors, yet many people will always remember him as the man who filled the Frankenstein monster's shoes after Boris Karloff. Although Bela Lugosi and Lon Chaney Jr. both had their opportunities at portraying the Frankenstein monster after Boris Karloff originated the role, no other actor had the success or recognition than Glenn Strange, who went on to portray the monster in HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, HOUSE OF DRACULA, and the wildly popular and hysterical ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN. The bulk of Glenn's career consisted of roles in many Hollywood westerns, always portraying henchmen, gun-slingers and thugs. He mostly played ominous characters, due to his lumbering height of 6'5". He eventually went on to achieve television success on the popluar TV western GUNSMOKE, which starred another Hollywood horror alumni, James Arness. Glenn unfortunately passed away from lung cancer on September 20th, 1973. Of his many roles in Hollywood, Glenn will always be loved by horror fans as the Frankenstein Monster! Happy Birthday Glenn!

Born on August 13, 1899, Alfred Hitchcock went on to become one of Hollywood's greatest directors, earning the title of "Master of Suspense". With such classics as "NORTH BY NORTHWEST", "The BIRDS", "STRANGERS ON A TRAIN" and of course my all-time favorite Hitchcock film "PSYCHO", his films went on to become some of Hollywood's best-loved and highly regarded films. Check out Hitchcock's filmography, as well as his very popular "Alfred Hitchcock Presents..." TV show (all available on DVD). Hitchcock sadly passed away April 29th, 1980, but his film legacy will live on forever! Happy Birthday to the Master Of Suspense!

JOHN LANDIS, born August 3, 1950, may be well-known as a director of famous Hollywood comedies such as ANIMAL HOUSE and TRADING PLACES, but to me he will always be the director of my all-time favorite werewolf movie, AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON. John has had his share of horror in his career, starting with the low-budget horror satire SCHLOCK, then of course with An American Werewolf In London. John also delved into the music video business by creating possibly one of the best music videos in history, Michael Jackson's THRILLER! John Landis later went on to direct the horror/comedy INNOCENT BLOOD, and let's not forget his entries into the Masters Of Horror series, DEER WOMAN and FAMILY. John is currently filming BURKE AND HARE, a film about the 2 most famous body snatchers in history. John has an incredible knack for mixing horror with comedy, something many have attempted but have failed miserably at. I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with John Landis last year and Spooky Empire's Weekend Of Horror in Orlando, Florida. He was an absolute riot! He was incredibly friendly and funny, and was definitely a high point for me. In fact, he saw my son Zachary and absolutely fell in love with him, snatched him from me and wouldn't give him back! (check out the pics below, also pictured with Paul Davis, director of the amazing AWIL documentary BEWARE THE MOON). Happy Birthday to one of Hollywood's best, John Landis!

James Whale has a long list of films he directed, from westerns to musicals, but he will always be remembered as the man who brought us the classics FRANKENSTEIN (1931), its sequel THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935), THE INVISIBLE MAN (1933) and THE OLD DARK HOUSE (1932). James Whale died at the age of 67, but his work will never be forgotten....often mimicked but never duplicated! Happy Birthday James!

Considered by many (including myself) to be the Godfather of Shock Rock, Jalacy Hawkins was born July 18, 1929. Going by the stage name of "Screamin' Jay Hawkins", he was well trained in classical piano, and also played guitar. His most successful record to date is "I Put A Spell On You". With it's bluesy riff and Jay's wild screams and moans, it quickly became a staple of horror novelty songs. Jay went on to have minor success with some other songs, "Feast Of The Mau Mau", "Frenzy" and "Constipation Blues". Alot of Jay's music was rooted in blues, but was never able to shake the label of a novelty performer, with his macabre stage antics. Jay is also considered to be a huge influence on many artists, ranging from The Rolling Stones and Alice Cooper, to Black Sabbath and Marilyn Manson. Sadly, Jay passed away on February 12, 2000. Happy Birthday to the original Wild Man!

Jason And The Argonauts, The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad, Mysterious Island, The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, Mighty Joe Young,...these are just a small handful of the amazing list of films Ray Harryhausen is responsible for. Ray Harryhausen, born June 29th, 1920, is a true pioneer in the world of stop-motion animation. At a young age, Ray was inspired by the work of Willis O'Brien, the man responsible for creating KING KONG. After that, Ray dedicated his life to improving the art form, with different techniques and amazing creature designs. His work on the Greek mythology films, and the Sinbad series, is highly regarded as some of the best stop-motion work ever done in the motion picture field. Computers have taken over now with their elaborate CGI, but in my opinion, nothing beats a good time watching a Ray Harryhausen film! Happy Birthday to one of the greatest creature creators of all time!

Born Laszlo Lowenstein, Peter Lorre was born on June 26, 1904 in what is now Slovakia. Known to many as Vincent Price's comedic sidekick in the American International films of the 60's, Peter started his film career in 1929. Peter also starred in several horror and thriller films in his early days, working with such stars as Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff, and was also known as Mr. Moto in the famous detective film series, before he got his roles in both Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon, both starring Humphrey Bogart. Peter went on to act in over 70 films, and is probably one of the most recognized voices and faces in film, most prominently his bugged eyes, spoofed in many films and cartoons. Happy Birthday Peter!!!

Vincent Leonard Price Jr. was born on this day, May 27th, 1911. I shouldn't have to tell you all who Vincent Price is, or how much he accomplished in his lifetime, but the man is and always will be the model of a consummate actor. His accomplishments, not only on film, but also on TV, stage, recordings and other media, will always attest to his wonderful talent. in his career he managed to star in over 103 films, as well as many TV appearances. Vincent Price is, and will always remain one of my personal heroes, as I mentioned before, he is one of my personal "Unholy Three". Christopher Frank Carandini Lee was born on May 27th, 1922, and has become one of the most recognized faces in Horror, along with Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Vincent Price and Peter Cushing. Christopher's list of characters ranges from villians to heroes, from vampires to Sith Lords, Bond villian to royalty. Christopher was even Knighted in 2009. Peter Wilton Cushing was born May 26th, 1913, and went on to be one of the biggest names in British horror. He is part of what I consider my personal "Unholy Three", the other two being Vincent Price and Boris Karloff. Peter Cushing, in my opinion, is hands down the BEST Baron Frankenstein ever to be put to film. Of course he is also widely known for his portrayal of Dr. Van Helsing in the Hammer Films Dracula series, along side Christopher Lee. Peter had a very extensive career, starring in over 129 films and television shows. Peter always brought a sense of class to his roles, whether he was playing a hero, such as Dr. Van Helsing, or whether he was playing a villian, like the evil Grand Moff Tarkin in the first Star Wars film. Leonidas Frank Chaney was born April 1st, 1883, to deaf parents, and went on to become one of silent film's greatest actors and one of horror film's biggest superstars. Lon Chaney, nicknamed "The Man of A Thousand Faces", worked on stage and vaudeville, before settling into a career as a film actor. Starting off in small bit parts, Chaney soon established himself as a great actor and a master of make-up, creating some of the most memorable and elaborate make-ups ever seen. Chaney's most famous make-ups, those of Erik in "The Phantom of The Opera", and as Quasimodo in "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" are the stuff of legends. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DWIGHT FRYE!

Dwight Frye, born February 22, 1899, was a very prominent character actor of stage and film, mostly known for his work in many of the early Universal monster classics. Many of us remember him as Renfield, the Count's dutiful slave in 1931's Dracula, and as the bumbling but torturous Fritz in 1931's Frankenstein. Dwight went on to act in many other classic Univseral films, such as The Bride Of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, Son Of Frankenstein and many others. Labeled as "The Man with the Thousand-Watt Stare", Dwight specialized in portraying mentally disturbed criminal types. His roles weren't always the biggest, but he was always truly unforgettable. Alice Cooper even recorded a tribute to Dwight with his song "The Ballad of Dwight Fry", check out the video below of Alice performing the song live! Happy Birthday Dwight, you madman you!!

Ricou Browning was born February 16, 1930, and is most famous for portraying the Creature in all the underwater scenes for The Creature From The Black Lagoon, The Revenge Of The Creature and The Creature Walks Among Us. Although Ricou is mostly known for his work as the Creature, Ricou was also a stunt man, producer, cinematographer, writer and director, writing and directing many episodes on the Flipper TV show, as well as feature films. Ricou has been involved in film and television, in front and behind the camera, for over 50 years. I had the pleasure of spending time with, and hosting his Q&A panel at last year's Spooky Empire Ultimate Horror Weekend (I'll be posting the videos soon, I promise!) Bobby "Boris" Pickett was born February 11, 1938, and went on to record possibly the most famous of all monster novelty records, The Monster Mash. The Monster Mash, billed as recorded by "Bobby "Boris" Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers" was a spoof of many of the popular dance crazes of the time, such as the Twist and the Mashed Potato. Bobby went on to record a full-length album, which along with The Monster Mash featured many songs, such as The Transylvania Twist, Blood Bank Blues, and Wolfbane, which is featured on this month's Monster Spookshow Radio! Below is a video of Bobby performing The Monster Mash at Chiller Theater in 2006, featuring the one and only horror host with the most, Zacherle, and music provided by The Dead Elvi! Lon Jr. will always be remembered for his portrayal of Lawrence Talbot in Universal Studio's The Wolfman, but Lon Jr. was no stranger to the screen, having acted in almost 70 films before starring in The Wolfman. Lon went on to portray many other famous hollywood monsters, such as The Son Of Dracula, Kharis the mummy in The Mummy's Tomb, The Mummy's Ghost, The Mummy's Curse, and the Frankenstein monster in The Ghost Of Frankenstein. Lon was also well versed in other genres, having starred in many westerns and dramas. Before starring in The Wolfman, Lon gained alot of attention for his role as Lennie in 1939's Of Mice And Men, co-starring Burgess Meredith. Hello fiends, here we are, a week into February and I haven't posted a new Monster Spookshow Radio yet. Well, as my story goes, back in December I had the misfortune of being delt a blow by the economy, thus being laid off from work, which of course plunged me head-on into having to seek out new employment. As a result, I haven't had the chance to while away at the computer and work on my Monster Spookshows. I do have songs lined up, I just haven't had a chance to sit and edit songs, sound clips, etc. I do promise that I will get to it as soon as un-humanly possible, but for now I apologize in my tardiness. George Romero, born February 4th, 1940, will always be remembered for 1 thing....ZOMBIES! Considered the "godfather" of the zombie genre, George Romero started the ball rolling back in 1968 with the legendary "Night Of The Living Dead". George has gone on to establish himself as a true master of horror with his "Dead" series of films, as well as other classics as Martin, Creepshow, The Crazies, and many others. I had the pleasure of meeting George at the San Diego Comic Con a couple of years back (photo below) and he indeed was a very funny and friendly man. Happy Birthday to the king of zombies, George Romero!

Born January 19, 1809, Edgar Allan Poe is one of America's greatest mystery writers and is credited with creating the detective-fiction genre, and he has inspired many authors and filmmakers throughout the years. Poe is by far my favorite writer, having read all of his work, several times. John is truly a master or horror, and I personally want to thank him for bringing us such wonderfully frightening films! Anne Francis, who was the love interest in the 1950s science-fiction classic "Forbidden Planet" and later was sexy private eye in "Honey West" on TV, has died at age 80. Francis died Sunday at a Santa Barbara nursing home, said Bill Guntle, a funeral director McDermott-Crockett & Associates Mortuary in Santa Barbara. Francis, who had surgery and chemotherapy after being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2007, died of complications of pancreatic cancer, her daughter, Jane Uemura, told the Los Angeles Times.

Francis, a stunningly beautiful blonde with a prominent beauty mark, appeared opposite such stars as Spencer Tracy, Paul Newman, Robert Taylor and Glenn Ford in some of the most popular films of the 1950s. But "Forbidden Planet" and "Honey West" made her reputation.

"Forbidden Planet" was hailed in Leonard Maltin's "2006 Movie Guide" as "one of the most ambitious and intelligent films of its genre." A science-fiction retelling of Shakespeare's "The Tempest," the 1956 film had Leslie Nielsen and other space travelers visiting a planet where expatriate scientist Walter Pidgeon, his daughter (Francis) and their helper, Robby the Robot, built a settlement.

In "Honey West," which aired from 1965 to 1966, Francis' private detective character — who kept a pet ocelot, a wildcat — was a female James Bond: sexy, stylish and as good with martial arts as she was with a gun. She was nominated for an Emmy for the role, which lasted 30 episodes.

Among her other films: "Bad Day at Black Rock" with Tracy and Robert Ryan, "Rogue Cop" with Taylor, "The Rack" with Newman, "A Lion Is in the Streets" with James Cagney, and "Hook, Line and Sinker" opposite Jerry Lewis.

When her movie career declined, Francis became active in television, appearing in dozens of series, including "Mission Impossible," "The Virginian," "My Three Sons," "Ironside," "Gunsmoke," "The Twilight Zone," "Charlie's Angels," "The Golden Girls," "Home Improvement" and "Nash Bridges."

Born Maila Elizabeth Syrjäniemi (later changing her name to Maila Nurmi), on December 11th, 1922, Vampira went on to become one of the most famous and most recognizable horror hosts in the history of television. Maila also ventured into film, most prominently featured in Ed Wood Jr.'s Plan 9 From Outer Space. Vampira's signature look, often imitated, especially by the scream queen herself Elvira, was actally borrowed from Charles Addams' famous cartoon The Addams Family's main matriarch Morticia Addams. Vampira went on to become a major horror icon, even becoming the subject of many songs, the most famous being Vampira by horrorpunk legends The Misfits.

Inspired by legendary Hollywood make-up artist Jack Pierce, Rick's first major professional make-up work was assisting the famous Dick Smith with the make-up work on The Exorcist. From there, Rick quickly established himself as one of the best horror and special effects make-up artists in the film industry. In 1981, Rick received an Academy Award for his work on An American Werewolf In London, the first ever Award given in this category. Hammer horror actress Ingrid Pitt, best known for starring in cult classics such as Countess Dracula, has died at the age of 73.The Polish-born star died at a hospital in south London after collapsing a few days ago. She was regarded by many fans as the queen of Hammer horror films.

The star's death comes weeks after film-maker Roy Ward Baker, who directed Pitt in The Vampire Lovers, died at the age of 93. Pitt's daughter Stephanie Blake told the BBC News website that her mother's death had come as a "huge surprise". After the actress collapsed recently, doctors had told her was she suffering from heart failure.
"She could be incredibly generous, loving, and she'll be sorely missed," Mrs Blake said. She added that she wanted her mother to be remembered as the Countess Dracula with the "wonderful teeth and the wonderful bosom".
The Wicker Man director Robin Hardy said he had "very good memories" of the actress. "She was a very attractive person in every sense. She was a perfectly good actress but a very decent person as well, not that those two things don't often go together. I'm very sorry to hear she's gone," he added.
Official Hammer historian Marcus Hearn paid tribute to the star, calling her a "talented actress and fine writer. All fans of Hammer and of British horror are going to miss her terribly." He added: "She was partly responsible for ushering in a bold and brazen era of sexually explicit horror films in the 1970s, but that should not denigrate her abilities as an actress." A good friend of the actress, Mr Hearn said she was "gloriously uninhibited" and "great fun to be with".
Although she was not the first female star of a Hammer film, Mr Hearn said she had always been "very proud" of becoming the first prominent female protagonist in a Hammer after her role in The Vampire Lovers. "All fans of Hammer and of British horror are going to miss her terribly," he said.
She began her career with fairly minor roles in several Spanish films in the mid-1960s. But in 1968 she landed a supporting role in war movie Where Eagles Dare, appearing alongside Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton.
The actress got her breakthrough role two years later in the horror thriller The Vampire Lovers, which was a box office success. Several Hammer movies followed, firmly establishing her as one of the key women of British horror of the 1970s. Her other film credits included The Wicker Man (1973), Who Dares Wins (1982), Smiley's People (1982) and Wild Geese II (1985). Pitt made regular appearances at horror conventions and penned several books about her career in the genre. Her talent will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Ingrid.

When I was a little boy, I remember going to the newsstand with my dad. There, among the typical magazines was tucked away a magazine, whose cover I could barely see, but I plucked it off the newsstand, and lo and behold my life would change forever, it was Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, the creation of the ultimate fanboy, Forrest J. Ackerman! Forrest J. Ackerman, also known as Mr. Science Fiction, 4SJ, Uncle Forry, Dr. Ackula, the Ackermonster, among many others, was born November 24th, 1916, and went on to create possibly the most influential and often copied monster magazine the world has even known. I was the ultimate Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine fan (still owning a nice collection of back issues), and in turn becoming a fan of Uncle Forry himself. I eventually grew to admire Forrest for his passion for monster and sci-fi movies. In fact, Forrest is actually credited as coining the phrase "sci-fi". Forrest J. Ackerman and Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine went on to be one of the single most influential sources to many a filmmaker, including, but not limited to, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, John Landis, Rick Baker, among many others. Forrest sadly passed away last December 8th, but he will forever live in the hearts of monster movie fans. Read all about Forrest's life on his Wikipedia page. Born William Henry Pratt, on November 23rd, 1887, Boris Karloff went on to become the most famous and recognized actors in the horror genre, earning the title "King of Monsters". Although he has performed in over 80 films before starring in the movie that made him a star, Frankenstein (1931), Boris Karloff went on to become a massive success, not only in films, but radio, stage and eventually on television. Boris went on to play such fantastic characters as the Frankenstein monster, The Mummy, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and many many more. I credit Boris Karloff on a personal level as being the reason I got into horror to begin with. As a small child I watched Frankenstein and it forever changed me into the horror fanatic I am today (check out my Boris tattoo in the picture below!). Born William Claude Rains on November 10th, 1889, we first saw (or should I say didn't see) Claude in his first starring role as The Invisible Man, directed by James Whale. Claude started his acting career on the London stage, but soon made the transition to film. After The Invisible Man, Claude started building up quite a hefty resumé of film, starring in such classics as The Adventures of Robin Hood, with Errol Flynn, Casablanca, co-starring Humphrey Bogart, and in Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious. Claude also established himself in the horror genre, starting of course with The Invisible Man, then starring as another classic monster, The Phantom Of The Opera. Ben Chapman, born October 29, 1928, was best known for playing the out-of-water Creature in the original Universal Studios classic The Creature From The Black Lagoon. Due to his large stature (Ben was 6'5" tall) he was the ideal size for playing the Creature in the land and out of water scenes, leaving all the underwater scenes to be played by Ricou Browning, an experienced underwater diver and stunt man. Ben sadly passed away shortly after midnight on February 21, 2008, from heart problems. Althouh Ben is gone, his Creature will live on forever in our hearts! Happy Birthday Ben!
